Conch Festival 2017 Coming this November Turks and Caicos Travel November 2017 The carnival vibes are returning to Blue Hills of Turks and Caicos Islands on November 25 this year. The Conch Festival is coming! A full-day event full of fun and food, the Conch Festival started as a way to bring more visitors to the Blue Hills each year, and has quickly become a famous celebration of the Turks and Caicos Islands’ signature cuisine. This festival has allowed local chefs the opportunity to get creative, cooking up conch empanadas, conch fritters and even conch wontons for the tasting delights of visitors and locals alike. At the festival, judges sample each local restaurant’s offerings and award prizes for best overall conch dish, best specialty dish, best conch salad, and best conch chowder. The overall winner is selected by a popular vote, and every visitor that opts to purchase a tasting pass can join in on the fun! Visitors are treated to a sampling of food, as well as local music, art and dancing. While there is a category for best Mojito as well, this festival is family friendly and offers fun activities for kids like face painting, competitions and games, and raffles. Conch Festival 2017 will be the 14th annual event, taking place on Saturday afternoon, November 25th, outside the Three Queens Bar and Restaurant. When the festival is over, be sure to check out the other gourmet dishes offered at local restaurants around the islands, as Turks and Caicos Islands are quickly becoming known for their flavourful and spicy cuisine! Each island offers its own unique culture, history, food, and music, making for a multitude of unique vacation destinations just a short flight away from the dark and cold winter months of the northern hemisphere. Turks and Caicos Islands have become a burgeoning hot-spot and popular vacation destination for celebrities in recent years, but now, thanks to some extra effort by various airlines, they are more accessible than ever. Southwest Airlines has recently started offering non-stop flights from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to the Turks and Caicos every day. Southwest Airlines isn’t alone; United Airlines has also announced that they will be introducing a non-stop flight every Saturday from Washington DC to Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, home to white sand beaches on turquoise shores that are consistently ranked some of the most beautiful in the world. Following a record-breaking year of visitors in 2016, tourism organizations in the Caribbean do not anticipate slowing down anytime soon. The tourism industry is so hot in the Caribbean in recent years, it amounts to roughly 15% of the GDPs of the region. Whether arriving by boat or by plane, these islands are open for visitors and ready to please. Airlines across North America are anticipating the annual onslaught of ticket sales and offering discounts and new non-stop regular flights to different islands as tourism picks up again for the busy winter season. Supporting local island businesses by visiting world-class resorts is a win-win for everybody, and the Caribbean is home to some of the most desirable accommodations in the world for those looking to relax and unwind. But this vast region of islands in the Atlantic just keeps on giving. Because of the islands’ convenient location and tumultuous history, the Caribbean has been home to a mixing of cultures for centuries: British and French explorers and traders, as well as other nations across Europe met up with the traditions of the indigenous Amerindians in the Caribbean, and brought slaves over from Africa, to make for a spicy and unique culinary adventure. The names of the dishes themselves prepare the soon-to-be-feaster for the spices ahead, like pepper pot soup, a Jamaican dish served with minced chili peppers, or the ominously titled “fire engine,” a breakfast dish that features the spicy local goat pepper in the Bahamas. While there are some staples that stay consistent across the region, each island also has its own local delicacies as well that are worth tasting. From street food to seafood to desserts, the Caribbean food scene should not be missed by any travelers looking to warm up from more than just the sun this winter. A charity called Potcake Place rescues stray dogs from across the Caribbean and tries to find them loving homes. Because some of these dogs have been living on the streets for a long time, sometimes their entire lives, they need a little bit of help socializing and being around people. Potcake Place has a brilliant solution that is taking the Internet by storm: visitors to the Turks and Caicos Islands can borrow a puppy for two hours to help them socialize. Potcake Place provides you with everything you need: a leash, treats, pickup bags, etc. Your only responsibility is to play with your new friend on the beach for up to two hours. Potcake Place typically has about 50 dogs at any given time available for visitors to borrow. The best part: these potcakes (mixed-breed dogs local to the Caribbean) are available for adoption. If you fall in love with your new beach buddy, Potcake Place will help organize the adoption and flights, and will meet you at the airport with a new puppy ready to take home. The organization has been successful in finding homes for countless stray dogs on the island, and for providing visitors and lonely potcakes with some much-needed quality time together. Ingredients:
Ice
6 oz light rum
12 mint sprigs, or spearmint, 8 roughly broken apart
6 tablespoons fresh lime juice
4 tablespoons sugar
Raspberry or strawberry juice
Club soda
4 slices lime
First add lime juice to sugar (or sugar cane syrup) and mint leaves. The mixture is then gently mashed, typically with an instrument called a “muddler,” but a wooden or plastic spoon will also do the trick. Next, add the rum to the mixture and briefly stir to dissolve the sugar, and to lift the mint leaves up from the bottom for better presentation. Top the drink with whole ice cubes and sparkling soda water, and stir in raspberry or strawberry juice to add the wonderful pink color. Mint leaves and lime wedges are used to garnish the glass.

What's New at The Palms Resort Turks & Caicos in 2018?
We are so pleased to share an update of what's new at The Palms Resort Turks & Caicos for 2018. After a challenging Fall season on Providenciales, the resort is back in full swing with many upgrades to ensure your stay on Grace Bay Beach is luxurious, sophisticated and brimming with fun experiences. How is the Turks and Caicos after Hurricane Irma? In September 2017 two Category 4 hurricanes hurtled through the Caribbean Islands devastating the islands of Barbuda and St. Martin and causing severe damage to the British Virgin Islands, Dominica and Puerto Rico. Providenciales suffered its share of infrastructure damage, which was minor in comparison, and for days electricity and water were not available. However, the island has mostly recovered from the impact of both hurricanes Irma and Maria with most hotels and restaurants open for business, and the beaches of Grace Bay and Long Bay looking even better than ever before. All airlines servicing Providenciales International Airport (PLS) have also resumed service, and demand for accommodation on the island is flourishing.
