ON LOCATION FROM THE BEAUTIFUL BY NATURE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS! #luxury #travel #thepalms #palmsparadise #thepalmstc #turksandcaicos A post shared by The Palms Turks and Caicos (@thepalmstc) on Sep 27, 2017 at 10:57am PDT The wrath from these September natural events could have seriously impacted the spectacular natural beauty of these idyllic islands. Fortunately however, reefs, dive sites and snorkeling areas saw limited damage, and beach erosion wasn’t extensive. Hurricane Irma and Maria roared in September 2017, but Turks and Caicos endured, recovered, and today, remains a top vacation destination boasting breathtakingly beautiful water and world class beaches. Post hurricane recovery in the islands is a testament to the amazing resilience of this country and its people. Success can be attributed to local government and utility company response as well as international assistance, but it is also due in large part to the efforts and commitment showcased by numerous volunteer groups and individuals. The Palms Hurricane Response Well Implemented A favorite destination for an intimate Caribbean vacation The Palms Turks and Caicos hurricane policy offers a no-hassle, 100% refund policy, in the event of a hurricane threat. If the threat of a hurricane prevents travel to Providenciales, or otherwise interferes with your vacation, the resort will offer a 100% refund of any unused portion of the resort stay, no questions asked. Prior to the impending hurricane events, the local Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) works with the government to assist the country with extensive preparations, provide media communication, and also provide post hurricane assessment and planning. As well, construction standards at The Palms Turks and Caicos created a safer environment for guests and staff members. Damage to the resort could have been so much more extensive, but tight construction codes, particularly in the Grace Bay area, meant that our buildings were constructed to withstand tremendous force. Category 5 Hurricane Irma on September 17, 2017 brought with it powerful winds approaching 185 mph and waves as high as 20 feet pounding the islands. If that wasn’t enough heard from nature, Hurricane Maria travelled through the region just off Grand Turk a week later bringing storm surge and high winds. Approximately half of the Turks and Caicos Islands are low elevation saline flats and wetlands with the rest of the islands very low elevation as well. These two hurricanes brought a tremendous storm surge resulting in significant water damage to buildings including island hotels and the main airport. Almost 1300 utility poles were downed, many structures incurred roof damage, and the Port of Turks and Caicos suffered extensive damage. The massive wake of Hurricane Irma impacted many islands in the Caribbean, but the Turks and Caicos made one of the fastest recoveries. The Providenciales International Airport was able to re-open quickly and receive flights. Fortis, the local utility supplier, with help from various North American crews, was able to respond quickly and managed to recover electrical service to the islands. The Turks and Caicos Port Authority worked diligently to address damages, and by November 2017, the port was fully operational for cruise sailings. Local Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) worked with donor groups to bring about rebuilding and recovery. Dedicated teams at island resorts and businesses worked tirelessly to restore and clean up facilities and grounds so that operations could be resumed as quickly as possible. Most businesses were back up and running by mid-November. The Palms Turks and Caicos created a relief fund to support affected staff members recover from the impact of the hurricanes. Friends of the property and past guests contributed generously to the Turks and Caicos Rebuilding Fund and Hurricane Irma Relief TCI. View this post on Instagram We are open!
