Day Trip to North and Middle Caicos in Turks and Caicos
The Turks and Caicos Islands lie in the Atlantic Ocean to the east of the Bahamas, and about 2 hours by plane from Miami and the North American mainland. The archipelago of 40 cays and islets sits on a sea mount rising up from the Atlantic Ocean. Each cay is unique and provides a glimpse of life in the Caribbean in times gone by. If you can ever drag yourself away from beautiful Grace Bay Beach, an entire world is awaiting to be explored in the Turks and Caicos. An easy day trip from The Palms Resort is exploring North and Middle Caicos to the east of us. North and Middle Caicos This adventure begins with a scenic ferry ride from "Leeward" (the eastern tip of Provo; check here for the North Caicos ferry schedule and Middle Caicos ferry schedule) to neighboring North Caicos to the east. You can most easily get to the caves of Middle Caicos from North Caicos, and, if you like, you can stop along the way to snorkel. [caption id="attachment_1327" align="alignnone" width="640"] Leeward, Providenciales. By Flickr user Tim Sackton. License: 2.0 Generic (CC BY 2.0)[/caption] North Caicos North Caicos (called just “North” by locals) is a fun island to explore thanks to its beautiful beaches, friendly people and peaceful surroundings. North Caicos is the ‘garden’ island of the Turks and Caicos because the slight increase in rainfall it receives enables it to be the most lush and fruitful island in the chain. After landing on North Caicos you will set off to explore the conch bar caves and venture deep inside the earth with your native guide to view stalactites and stalagmites, bats, white owls and incredible limestone formations. Middle Caicos From North Caicos, it's possible to continue on to Middle Caicos--a sandy causeway connects the two islands. While you can walk the trail to reach Middle Caicos, it would take far too long. Instead, rent or arrange transport to take you to Middle Caicos and its caves. [caption id="attachment_1330" align="alignnone" width="640"] Dragon Cay from Mudjin Bay, by Flickr user Kate Ure.[/caption] The caves of Middle Caicos are located close to Mudjin Harbour. The limestone bluffs offer some unforgettable views of spectacular seascapes here. Besides awe-inspiring views Mudjin Harbour features some truly gorgeous beaches. [caption id="attachment_1329" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image by Ali West. License: 2.0 Generic (CC BY 2.0)[/caption] Dragon Cay, a small sand bar, is accessible from the beach at low tide. But even if the tide does not cooperate, the beach at Mudjin Harbour provides a unique place to splash in the sea and relax on the beautiful white sand. Middle Caicos Caves The Turks and Caicos are the site of the largest above-ground cave network in the entire Caribbean, and some of the most striking caves can be found on Middle Caicos. [caption id="attachment_1325" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image by Ali West. License: 2.0 Generic (CC BY 2.0)[/caption] Since they’re located above ground, the caves on Middle Caicos can be explored easily by anyone (with proper footwear), and offer an interesting glimpse of the natural history and cultural heritage of the Caribbean. Only recently rediscovered, the caves were once the home of indigenous Lucayan Indians, and it’s thought they sheltered in the caves during hurricanes. The Village Caves and the Conch Bar are the most frequently visited caves on Middle Caicos. Exploring Providenciales Even if you don’t have time to do a day trip to explore more of the Turks and Caicos, our very own island of Providenciales offers plenty of opportunities for exploration. There are a wide variety of beaches and landscapes to choose from. Learn more about the beaches of Providenciales here.

Why Relaxing is Important for Your Health
Finding the time to relax is essential for your health and well-being. Within Western society, the average adult works 50 weeks a year with only two weeks paid vacation. That doesn’t give you much time to destress and rejuvenate. Do you want to find out if you are stressed? Take a moment to answer the questions in this short quiz. Are you: Rushing to get the kids and/or yourself ready for school in the morning? Skipping breakfast and eating something unhealthy later? Navigating gridlock traffic to get to work? Eating at your desk at lunch while you work? Using your free time to do housework and run errands? Constantly interrupted with emails and the cell phone ringing? Not having enough time to exercise properly? Getting less than the recommended 8 hours sleep? You’re not alone…Unfortunately. The popular modern-day mantra to keep busy 24/7/365 means we’re continuously juggling responsibilities, rushing to meet the needs of others, and forced to adapt to a constantly shifting playing field. This level of activity isn’t sustainable for anyone and it’s leading to physical and mental health challenges. Scientists continue to explore the negative impacts of chronic stress and they are providing ever stronger evidence that we need to do a better job of incorporating relaxation into our busy lives. Avoid Colds [caption id="" align="alignleft" width="201"] Professor Sheldon Cohen[/caption] According to research by Dr. Sheldon Cohen, a psychology professor at Carnegie Mellon University, relaxing lowers your risk of catching a cold. His studies on stress research found chronic stress impedes your body’s ability to fight inflammation, increasing your risk of getting sick. Avoid Depression Strong evidence links chronic stress to depression and other mood disorders. High levels of the stress hormone cortisol lowers serotonin and dopamine levels, all of which is linked to depression. “Like regular email vs. email spam, a little stress is good but too much is bad; you'll need to shut down and reboot,” says Dr. Esther Sternberg, a leading stress researcher and the chief of neuroendocrine immunology and behavior at the National Institute of Mental Health. Improve Your Memory Researchers at the Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, have revealed relaxation can improve memory retention, which is particularly beneficial for patients with mild to moderation dementia. “Our findings support the view that the formation of new memories is not completed within seconds,” Michaela Dewar, a psychologist at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, said in a statement. She added that the study suggests “activities that we are engaged in for the first few minutes after learning new information really affect how well we remember this information a week later.” Make Better Decisions Cognitive neuroscientists Dr. Mara Mather and Dr. Nichole Lighthall found stress can change how we weigh risks and rewards, and negatively interfere with our judgement and reasoning. “Stress seems to help people learn from positive feedback and impairs their learning from negative feedback,” Dr. Mather says. It’s Time to Take the Hint destress for your health Overwhelming scientific evidence points to the physiological and mental benefits of relaxation. Why not take the time to let your mind and body recharge; to nurture yourself and focus on your health and well-being? Maybe don’t bank your vacation hours or schedule a house renovation. If you're already staying with us, don't forget to visit the spa, and if you're not here already, check out our current specials! Why not plan the Caribbean beach vacation you’ve been dreaming about instead? The ivory white, powder-soft sand and crystal clear turquoise waters are beckoning you. As you recline deeper into your beach lounger, enjoying the warm sand beneath your feet and the calming sounds of the surf, you’ll realize it was one of the best decisions you’ve ever made…But don’t forget to turn the cell phone off!

Help Staff at The Palms Turks and Caicos Recover from Hurricane Irma
We have created this fund to assist our staff members at The Palms who have either lost roofs or entire homes and belongings following the catastrophic devastation of Hurricane Irma in certain areas on the island. Hurricane Irma and Providenciales On September 7, Hurricane Irma passed by the island of Providenciales. It was a very intense storm that brought with it high winds and rainfall, as well as a storm surge. Luckily, The Palms resort and beautiful Grace Bay Beach emerged relatively unscathed, and we're on track to opening for the season as scheduled. While the beach and the resort were lucky, a lot of our good fortune is due to the hard efforts of our excellent staff. Staff at The Palms not only prepared the resort to withstand the hurricane, but they were incredibly helpful afterward by taking care of any remaining guests, as well as other visitors to Providenciales. We're really thankful to have such a dedicated team of people who care so much. However, while The Palms will be fine, many of our staff were more severely affected by Hurricane Irma Most of the hardest hit areas on the island were inhabited by our staff: Blue Hills, Kew Town, Five Cays and other settlements. Some of our staff have experienced life-changing events such as: Serious damage to or have lost the roof to their own home Damage so serious to their rental accommodation that they must find a new home until repairs are made There are also staff with homes that have been completely destroyed and are without any reliable housing now. Assist Staff Rebuilding Their Homes and Their Lives Following in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, we are creating a fund so that you may contribute to assist some of our staff in rebuilding their homes and their lives. As mentioned, some have lost part of their roofs, some have lost truly everything. donate button Not only will these funds be used for supplies and materials to rebuild but also assistance in doing so. Anything you are able to contribute will be greatly appreciated! The donation campaign is being hosted on Generosity, a community for showing and sharing compassion through socially conscious fundraising. Anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated.
