Why Relaxing is Important for Your Health
Finding the time to relax is essential for your health and well-being. Within Western society, the average adult works 50 weeks a year with only two weeks paid vacation. That doesn’t give you much time to destress and rejuvenate. Do you want to find out if you are stressed? Take a moment to answer the questions in this short quiz. Are you: Rushing to get the kids and/or yourself ready for school in the morning? Skipping breakfast and eating something unhealthy later? Navigating gridlock traffic to get to work? Eating at your desk at lunch while you work? Using your free time to do housework and run errands? Constantly interrupted with emails and the cell phone ringing? Not having enough time to exercise properly? Getting less than the recommended 8 hours sleep? You’re not alone…Unfortunately. The popular modern-day mantra to keep busy 24/7/365 means we’re continuously juggling responsibilities, rushing to meet the needs of others, and forced to adapt to a constantly shifting playing field. This level of activity isn’t sustainable for anyone and it’s leading to physical and mental health challenges. Scientists continue to explore the negative impacts of chronic stress and they are providing ever stronger evidence that we need to do a better job of incorporating relaxation into our busy lives. Avoid Colds [caption id="" align="alignleft" width="201"] Professor Sheldon Cohen[/caption] According to research by Dr. Sheldon Cohen, a psychology professor at Carnegie Mellon University, relaxing lowers your risk of catching a cold. His studies on stress research found chronic stress impedes your body’s ability to fight inflammation, increasing your risk of getting sick. Avoid Depression Strong evidence links chronic stress to depression and other mood disorders. High levels of the stress hormone cortisol lowers serotonin and dopamine levels, all of which is linked to depression. “Like regular email vs. email spam, a little stress is good but too much is bad; you'll need to shut down and reboot,” says Dr. Esther Sternberg, a leading stress researcher and the chief of neuroendocrine immunology and behavior at the National Institute of Mental Health. Improve Your Memory Researchers at the Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, have revealed relaxation can improve memory retention, which is particularly beneficial for patients with mild to moderation dementia. “Our findings support the view that the formation of new memories is not completed within seconds,” Michaela Dewar, a psychologist at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, said in a statement. She added that the study suggests “activities that we are engaged in for the first few minutes after learning new information really affect how well we remember this information a week later.” Make Better Decisions Cognitive neuroscientists Dr. Mara Mather and Dr. Nichole Lighthall found stress can change how we weigh risks and rewards, and negatively interfere with our judgement and reasoning. “Stress seems to help people learn from positive feedback and impairs their learning from negative feedback,” Dr. Mather says. It’s Time to Take the Hint destress for your health Overwhelming scientific evidence points to the physiological and mental benefits of relaxation. Why not take the time to let your mind and body recharge; to nurture yourself and focus on your health and well-being? Maybe don’t bank your vacation hours or schedule a house renovation. If you're already staying with us, don't forget to visit the spa, and if you're not here already, check out our current specials! Why not plan the Caribbean beach vacation you’ve been dreaming about instead? The ivory white, powder-soft sand and crystal clear turquoise waters are beckoning you. As you recline deeper into your beach lounger, enjoying the warm sand beneath your feet and the calming sounds of the surf, you’ll realize it was one of the best decisions you’ve ever made…But don’t forget to turn the cell phone off!

Turks and Caicos Events for 2017
There is no shortage of Turks and Caicos events and activities occurring throughout the year. Many of our events are great for families, and provide a good opportunity to meet and get to know the local residents of islands. Here are a few of the major events in Turks and Caicos. We've starting with summer 2017 events and look forward to adding fall and winter events as they are finalized. Events in Spring and Summer 2017 50th Annual Big South Regatta When: May 25-May 28, 2017 Taking place on South Caicos, aka the "Big South", this annual regatta features a variety of sailboat races and exhibitions. The center of the regatta is Cockburn Harbor. Now just a sleepy and picturesque harbor town, at one time Cockburn Harbor in South Caicos was the commercial hub of the islands. Everyone from Queen Elizabeth to fearsome pirates have passed through this town, thanks to its strong connection to the sea and sailing. This event is for adventurers, and requires at least an overnight stay away from The Palms resort. See Turks and Caicos Tourism for more information. 7th Annual “Race for the Conch” Eco-SeaSwim When: July 1, 2017, 9:30am This open-water race happens right here off Grace Bay Beach, close to The Palms resort. This annual race is intended to promote awareness of the valuable ocean and reef systems surrounding the islands and funds support local ocean and reef protection charities. The race consists of both a one-mile and a 2.4 mile race along the world-renowned Grace Bay Beach, and is open to all competitive and recreational swimmers. There is also a 100 meter children’s “Race for the Conch” for swimmers twelve years and younger (all children may participate for free). See the Facebook page for more details. Fall Events Caribbean Food & Wine Festival When: First week of November This three-day world-class event each November brings together celebrity chefs, cutting-edge cuisine and truly noteworthy wines and spirits, all right here on the island of Providenciales. The Caribbean Food & Wine Festival is hosted at different resorts along Grace Bay Beach each year in early November, an ideal time of the year to visit the islands. Check the event's Facebook page closer to November, 2017 for more details. Turks and Caicos Conch Festival When: The final week of November At the end of every November the islands kick off the holiday season with the world’s only festival devoted to the conch, a local delicacy. Now in it’s 14th year, the Conch Festival is a three-day, weekend event, and starts with a Calypso event on Friday. The next day, Saturday, is when the festival officially starts. Refer to the event's Facebook page for more details closer to November. Winter Events Christmas in Turks and Caicos Christmas is a quiet time, and many locals spend the day with their families. The Palms resort itself is decorated for Christmas, and many of our guests spend the day on the beach or at the pool, basking under the warm Caribbean sun. Maskanoo Parade When: December 26 After Christmas Day, winter celebrations kick off with the Maskanoo parade on December 26 in the Bight Settlement, close to Grace Bay. Maskanoo is based on the rituals of the Africans brought to the Turks and Caicos islands two hundred years ago to work on salt plantations throughout our islands. Today, the post-Christmas Maskanoo masquerade is a reminder of our rich history, unique culture and friendly, lively locals. New Year's Eve When: December 31 New Year’s Eve starts off with an island tradition called Old Year’s Night. Residents of Turks and Caicos attend church services until late on New Year's Eve. After church service ends, bells ring out into the night to bring good luck into the New Year. At midnight, fireworks are set off on Grace Bay Beach to celebrate the New Year. Events in Spring 2018 While spring 2018 is still a year or so away there are many events throughout the spring that are great for families. The spring season starts with the Middle Caicos Valentine’s Day model boat race, which is typically held on the weekend following February 14. Check the Middle Caicos web page for more details closer to the date. Easter in Turks and Caicos The Easter season each year starts with the Turks and Caicos Kite Festival. The Palms Turks and Caicos
Grace Bay Beach Luxury Resort on Idyllic Providenciales Welcome to The Palms Turks and Caicos, an intimate, all-suite resort located directly on famed Grace Bay beach on Providenciales. The $95 million, 72-suite resort opened its doors in early 2005 and has received ongoing praise for its magnificent architecture and inspired amenities. The Palms' architecture and design features were inspired by the designs of Oliver Messel. In the early '60's Messel was noted for his use of the materials and traditions of island architecture on his adopted island of Barbados. The mix of baroque and classical design features include slender Greek columns, flattened arches, and white-on-white interiors. The resort features cool Barbadian coral stone in its five buildings, and has open, island-inspired architecture throughout. The result is an exquisite eye catching development that showcases the natural beauty of its surroundings, from the fragrant gardens, mesmerizing beachfront, and sparkling infinity pool. To recognize the inspirations drawn from Messel, the magnificent ballroom at The Palms has been named to honor him. The Palms comprises 5 buildings which surround the pool, swim-up bar, sunken restaurant and gardens, and opens onto strikingly-beautiful Grace Bay beach where relaxing sun pods and attentive personal attention are part of the luxe amentities. The magnificent, award-winning spa spans 25,000 square-feet, complete with reflecting pools, serene gardens, and a canal that leads to the treatment rooms. Body, face and nail services are available for personal or group experiences and are provided within tranquil surroundings which promote deep relaxation. The resort features on-site restaurants and lounges where fine-dining and casual menus paired with tantalizing cocktails are inspired by international flavors and sophisticated island accents. Customized dining options, butler and in-suite chef service along with a host of personal touches can be requested at The Palms to craft your holiday in the Turks and Caicos exactly to your tastes.
